The daf is a type of frame drum, as depicted in many Persian miniatures. At first sight it may seem to be a relatively simple instrument, but has the potential of making complicated rhythmic patterns and sounds. A jingle effect to the sound can be heard while it is played. It is caused by the metal rings on the inside the frame which is covered with goat-skin.
